Thank you for taking the time to explore the "More" tab. This section highlights my passion for the Preservation of History through Photography. In 2016 I found that I was intrigued by the History and architecture of the numerous churches, schools, homes, etc. scattered all around South Carolina. I enjoy hopping on my motorcycle and heading out to explore these amazing places. Every trip is an adventure, and finding these hidden gems is my reward! I hope that you enjoy looking through the various albums within. If you find a particular picture that speaks to you...go to the Contact tab and send me an email. Charleston, South Carolina

This album contains random pictures from my many trips to downtown Charleston, SC. I absolutely love this city! If you're curious about the History...keep reading. For more information follow the link below!

The history of Charleston, South Carolina, is one of the longest and most diverse of any community in the United States, spanning hundreds of years of physical settlement beginning in 1670 through modern times. Charleston was the leading city in the South from the colonial era to the Civil War The city grew wealthy through the export of rice and, later, sea island cotton and it was the base for many wealthy merchants and landowners.

The devastation of the Civil War and the ruin of the Charleston's hinterland lost the city its regional dominance. However, it remained the center of the South Carolina economy, while in politics the upstate politicians routinely attacked its aristocratic and undemocratic tone. Beginning during World War II, Charleston became a major naval base. In recent decades, tourism and service industries have led the economy to a new level of prosperity.

Christ Church

Although the congregation was organized around 1835. the construction of the church did not start until after the Civil War. It was completed in 1887 using materials from the first church located in Willtown Bluff, a historic settlement that was situated nearby.
Services are no longer held at Christ Church, however it is opened up for special occasions.

Cross Swamp Methodist Church

Although I couldn't dig up much information on this little Church (other the what is on the Marker),I did find that the original church was built before 1900 with lumber from Aaron Varn's saw mill. Aaron Varn was a Bavarian Plantation owner. His Plantation was named Broxton Plantation. Now known as Broxton Bridge Plantation in Erhardt, SC. it is still owned by the Varn family and is ran as a B&B. I did manage to find some information on the Cemetery. It was originally called the Jones and Murdaugh Family Cemetery, and had a section for the family slaves. It seems that this little gem has been all but forgotten...until now. I brought it back to life. Even if only for a little while. If you are ever in or around Islandton, SC. give this place a look. It has a bit of a creepy feeling about it, since it is literally in the middle of nowhere. I cannot tell you the exact address, but if you find Lively Stone Rd. you can't miss it. Here are the coordinates.

Providence Methodist Church

Providence Methodist Church's congregation was established prior to the Civil War. The current site is the third location for the church, and was deeded to Thomas Raysor Risher in 1909 upon it's completion. The congregation is believed to have grown after nearby Ireland Creek Church in Walterboro fell into despair in the 1870s. Providence Methodist Church still hold services every Sunday.
